Psychology Week Day 1: Faculty Feature
During Psychology Week, we are highlighting some of the faculty here in the Psychology department at Minnesota State University, Mankato. You can learn more about our department, the degrees we offer, and other information and resources at https://www.mnsu.edu/programs/psychology/. Read on and check back every day this week for information about our faculty and their helpful advice for students.
Eric Sprankle, PsyD, Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in sexual health
“One thing I like about clinical psychology (and sexual health in particular) is the interdisciplinary nature of the work. For my research, I often collaborate with sociologists and gender studies historians, and my clinical practice has had me regularly collaborating with urologists and gynecologists.”
Eric’s Advice:
“A top piece of advice I would give to psychology majors is to obtain some form of job or volunteer experience in the field while you are an undergrad. Not only will this be beneficial for your CV, but it will afford you the opportunity to know what parts of the field you like and dislike to better guide your career path.”
Jeffrey Buchanan, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno.
“My specific interests are in mental health and aging, and I do research related to everyday ageism. What I like about our field is how scientific knowledge can be directly applied to improve the lives of individuals.”
Jeffrey’s Advice:
“Get involved - join a research team, join Psychology Club, and/or volunteer for human services organizations. These experiences will show future employers or graduate programs that you are willing to pursue your interests in psychology in specific ways and that you are serious about your education. Also, meet with an advisor on a regular basis and talk to professors in and out of class - professors love when students show an interest in course content.”
