Learning how to LEARN

By Karla Lassonde

Dr. Lassonde recently presented the Minnesota State University, Mankato, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences annual Frontier Forum Lecture.

In this talk she discusses limits of attention and best strategies for learning. She emphasizes that the type of curiosity we had as children made learning easy. When we are curious we are highly motivated to learn all we can about a subject. Traditional teaching and learning environments may strongly emphasis learning vast amounts of material, yet learners often lack motivation and curiosity. In addition, students are not taught the cognitive skills related to memory and attention that would make them more successful learners. She reveals a gap in education in that students are not being taught how they learn and proposes a method anyone can used called LEARN.
